British Class 43 'Warship' B-B Diesel-Hydraulic
The Bachmann Class 43 The Class 43 'Warship' was similar in outward appearance to the Swindon built Class 42, but differed mechanically. Built by the North British Locomotive Company (NBL) between 1960 and 1962, they were numbered D833 to D865. The Class 43's were fitted with two MAN engines driving through Voith hydraulic transmissions, all built under license by NBL. The Class 43's turned out not to be as reliable as their Swindon counterparts and were all withdrawn from service before the Class 42's. My model is the Bachmann version. This is a newly tooled body and not an altered Class 42. The moulding is far crisper than the Class 42 and does feature some extra detail, such as the engine room roof hatches. These are supplied separately in a bag with a variety of open or closed versions. Examination of photographs will show varying combinations of open and closed, but all open seems quite common. They fit in moulded recesses in the roof and I secured mine with Glue'n'Glaze. I added some Shawplan etched nameplates to my model. I'm quite pleased with the Class 43 and would rate it as one of Bachmanns better attempts.
As far as I know, this is the only proper model of a Class 43 to be offered. Although MTK marketed a Class 43, I think it was just a Class 42 body that you could renumber as a Class 43. |
