North British Class 16 Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric

The Heljan Class 16

The North British Company produced ten Type 1 locomotives, similar to the Class 15, although more angular, perhaps more accurately, similar to their 10800 for the LMS. Powered by the Paxman V16 engine, they were notoriously unreliable, with all ten often to be seen at Stratford awaiting repairs. As such, withdrawals came early and non survived.

The first model I built of a Class 16 was a Dave Alexander kit, following the same principles as Dave's Class 15, with two Tenshodo motor bogies. Although the kit made up well, it was perhaps inevitable that Heljan, having produced a Class 15, would use the running rear to make a Class 16, which they duly did.

Although I still have my original kit, I now use the Heljan version.

The Heljan Class 16 follows the same basic construction and performance of the company's Class 15. Again, this is one of the better attempts by Heljan, no doubt assisted by Howes Models, the UK Agent at the time.

The Heljan model was released in 2013. Dave Alexander produced a white metal kit, as did MTK.
