BRCW Class 27 Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric

Heljan 2006 release Class 27

The Class 27's were a development of the Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Company's Class 26 locomotive. The Class 27's featured a revised body design notably with the addition of a four character headcode box mounted on the roof above the cab windows. The sixty-nine locomotives also had the slightly more powerful Sulzer 6LDA-28B engine driving a GEC generator and traction motors. Initially the allocation was split between Glasgow Eastfield, Thornaby and Cricklewood. Allocation changes saw Leicester gain some locomotives. Eventually, the whole fleet was transferred to Scotland by 1969. The Edinburgh-Glasgow service had been worked by Swindon Inter City DMU's, but had started to suffer reliability issues with the intense working. It was decided to convert 24 of Class 27's to Push-Pull operation in 1971-3 for use with Mk.II coaches, one locomotive at either end.  This formed two sub-classes, Class 27/0 and the Push-Pull fitted Class 27/1. It was then decided to convert half of the Class 27/1's to provide electric heating for the Push-Pull sets in 1973-1976. This involved replacing the steam heating boiler with a Deutz air cooled diesel engine generator set. This created the Class 27/2 sub-class and the Push-Pull trains would have a Class 27/1 at one end and a Class 27/2 at the other. The intense 90mph working eventually caused reliability problems and the Push-Pull trains were replaced by a Class 47/7 and a DBSO. The Class 27/1 and 27/2's were renumbered back as Class 27/0's in 1982. The Class 27's carried on working until a mass withdrawal of the class in 1987, due to the presence of blue asbestos.

My model is the original Heljan release of 2006 in green livery with a small yellow warning panel. It is an improvement over the previous Lima model, but does have a few problems. One issue is with the shape of the cab roof dome not being quite right. Another issue is that despite being in early livery, the front cab connecting doors are plated over.

Lima produced a model released in 1989. Silver Fox produced a resin bodied kit of the class. The Heljan model was released in 2006. Heljan released a re-tooled version in 2020 with a number of improvements including etched grilles.
