BR Class 74 Bo-Bo

Ten Class 71's were rebuilt at electro-diesels and reclassified Class 74 between 1967 and 1968 at Crewe Works. The were classified originally as Type HB. They were to be numbered E7001-E7010, but when rebuilt they were numbered E6101-E6110. They were out shopped in the standard  BR Corporate Blue/Yellow scheme. They were fitted with a 650bhp Paxman Ventura engine.

In the event, it was the poor reliability of the diesel-engine and electrical systems that led to the class's demise. The class were withdrawn between 1976 and 1977.

Another DC Kits model, it follows the same basic construction as the Class 71. In addition though, I have added a see through etched brass fan on the roof. I have also removed the moulded jumper cables and added separate white metal versions and sprung buffers.

The motor bogie is again an Black Beetle with the correct spoked wheels. The Class 74's were finished in corporate blue from the outset and my model shows E6108 in this livery. DC only at the moment, DCC conversion will happen at some stage along with fitting working lights.

Since completing my model, DJ Models announced in October 2015 their intention to produce a 'crowd funded' model. DJ being Dave Jones, formerly of Dapol. This seems an obvious follow on model from the Class 71 DJ Models is also producing. However, in late 2018, DJ Models announced that it was postponing the project indefinitely. In 2019, DJ Models went in receivership, so I doubt this will appear unless someone else takes it up.

MTK produced a white metal kit of the Class 74, updating it to an etched brass and white metal kit later. The latter version resurfaced under the NNK name later. Genesis Kits also produced a white metal kit for a while. L&J Models produced a resin bodied version.
