Southern Railway Class 70

The original Class 70's were the former Southern Railway Bullied-Raworth electric booster locomotives numbered CC1, CC2 and 20003.

This is one of the late Alastair Rolfe's No Nonsense Kits, formerly an MTK kit. The rather poor photograph shows that it has a rolled etched brass body with additional etched detail and white metal cab ends and chassis.

Construction halted on this locomotive when I heard that another company was going to make a resin bodied version and I was waiting to see what this would be like. In the event Ajay Models have produced said kit, also available through Radley Models, but it doesn't look any better than the NNK version. If anything, not quite a good! Motorising this locomotive is also a problem I have to overcome due to the very narrow clearance between the frames.

It has since been suggested that the Hornby 'Railroad' Class 40 chassis, suitably altered and the bogies chopped down to Co-Co arrangement, is suitable as a chassis. The said model has been acquired and I will try adapting the chassis to suit in an effort to get this 'long term' kit finished!

MTK offered both white metal and later etched brass versions of all three locomotives. The etched brass version resurfaced as the NNK Kit I am building. Genesis Kits also made a white metal kit of CC1 and CC2 only. L&J Models produced a resin body kit of 20003.
