LMS 10000 Diesel-Electric Co-Co

Dapol 10000

The LMS ordered two mainline diesel-electric locomotives,  10000 and 10001. 10000 was delivered in 1947 and carried LMS black and silver livery with LMS in the middle of the body. 10001 was delivered to British Railways and did not have the LMS markings. The locomotives went through extensive trials, sometimes working double headed on the the Royal Scot. With deliveries of Modernisation Plan diesels, 10000 and 10001 were relegated to lesser duties, finally being scrapped in 1968.

My take on 10000 is the Silver Fox Models resin kit running on a modified Lima Class 47. As usual, I have altered the kit in some minor ways. The moulded handrails have been replaced with separate nickel silver wire ones. Suitable etched grilles have been fitted on the roof ran. My own version of non-rotating sprung oval buffers have been fitted. Separate turned brass horns have been fitted on the roof. The metal numerals and LMS letters are etched varieties from Fox Transfers. The model includes interior cab detail.

Overall, I am pleased with the way the model has turned out and it is a reasonable runner.

Since building this kit, Dapol and Bachmann have produced RTR versions. I bought the Dapol version which is a competent model. However, I think the Bachmann version has the edge, probably as theirs was later and they had a chance to inspect the competition.
